This is a hotel in Bora Bora. I remember seeing a picture of this place a while back and I remember thinking how cool it would be to stay there. Well, I haven't yet, and who knows if I ever will, but I wanted to show you a picture of it - since it's such a cool idea, and with the last blog post bringing up the topic, I'm kind of in a world travel type mood.

How sweet would it be to stay in one of these shacks?

Maybe it’s a kid thing that I haven’t outgrown, but the idea of staying in a raised construction makes me think of tree forts. Who doesn’t love tree forts? Who hasn’t wished, at least once, that they could be living in the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse? That's not just me, is it?

Foreign Living

I had a good conversation with my brother, Rob, the other night. We were talking about what it would be like to live in another country for 2-6 months (or maybe more). Rob's idea of sweet livin' would be to live in Monaco on the Mediterranean. I also have thought about a spot like that. However, we both finally agreed that the biggest draw to foreign living comes from what we’ve seen in movies - and we had to admit that that’s a glamorized point of view. How often do you see movies set in/on/around the Mediterranean during a gloomy day? How often do you see it from the point of view of a crappy shack? I think pretty much never. Usually you see it from a rich guys house during a perfect day. Or, you see it from a rich guy’s yacht. Right?

So what does this tell us? It tells us that you need to be a rich dude (or chick). And, that you should only go outside on days that it’s nice out (and you should install TV’s in place of windows so that it looks nice out all the time).

At least, that’s what I figured the conclusion was.

Or maybe not. Actually, what we came up with is that we need to be more social.

We came up with that because, as Rob was saying, (paraphrasing) “What would keep a person, while living in a sweet foreign city, from resorting to his/her old ways? For example, setting up a media center and watching TV/movies all day long. Or getting on the internet to chat all the time?”

That was good insight. The TV thing wouldn’t be a big deal for me, cause I don’t watch too much of it. But I could totally see myself checking my e-mail all the time. I realize that I don’t ever talk to my neighbors or the local town folk. And, the reality is that I don’t want to. Maybe it’s an American thing to not really talk with your neighbors? Or, maybe it’s our generation? Or, it’s because we aren’t big city dwellers. Or maybe I just want to blame something, other than myself.

Don’t get me wrong, I think I’m a pretty gregarious fellow. I just don’t find myself talking to too many strangers. Maybe that’s ok. But, the point is that I’d probably have to change that to really enjoy living in another country. I’d like to think that curiosity would get me out and about. But, I’m not sure.

Out of curiosity, where do you think you'd live if you could live in a foreign country for 2-6 months? The World Showcase in Epcot doesn't count!

Quick Update

Just wanted to give a little update on the goings on as of late.

1) Tax season is under way and all of us that usually post to this blog are SUPER busy!

2) I bought a rowing machine and it's so awesomely radical! I bought the Concept2 rower. This baby has every thing you could ever wish for! It has things like: a computer! I love computers!

3) I was looking at some statistics for my website and I find it funny that the number one search term that direct people to this blog happen to be "asian+guy". The post that must be the culprit is this one. Who is searching for "asian guy"? Single chicks? Or what? If it really is single chicks, then I have to say I really REALLY wish I was an Asian guy seeing as that's what they must all be looking for.
