Noodles

Noodles & Co is the first place he ate! We stopped right after we got in the car from the airport. They didn't have any Noodles in Houston and Rob wanted the wisconsin mac and cheese. YUM So whoever voted Other, you're right! You'll have to talk to Bri about the prize. He set up the survey =) 

Rob is doing well. Our kitties are very happy to have us here. None of them have given us the silent treatment. It has been nice. Except the youngest Kari kept me up last night from her purring! We are glad to be home. Rob has been able to sleep a lot better in our own bed.

WE'RE HOME!

We're home! Rob is watching the F1 stuff that recorded. The plane ride went well. We were able to go non stop and it was only 2 hours and 20 minutes. Rob was able to be wheel chaired around and then Bri picked us up. We all thought we were getting away from the heat and humidity when we left Houston. It's hot here!

The picture is from Dylan's candy bar store. I wish I had that sundae right now to celebrate we're home! Mmmm that was good!

We're waiting for transportation to pick us up so we can get out of here. We're very excited!

WE'RE GOING HOME!

Hello! More pictures of the zoo. 

We're leaving to go get Rob all ready to leave the hospital. We need to fill prescriptions after he gets out so we're hoping they're on top of things!! He needs to get a pic line out as well. Poor Rob is on lovenox shots again until his blood levels are at the right place so it won't clot in his mechanical valve. He hates those shots. We need to leave the hospital by 12. We're all very excited to go home.

The zoo!

Mike, Denise and I went to the Houston zoo. We got someone to take a picture of all three of us. I think the picture turned out great. It was so hot outside. We forgot that the whole zoo was outside. We were sweating. We got to see some cute animals though.

Rob has been resting all day. We're getting ready for a big day tomorrow. WE'RE GOING HOME!!!!

My evil plan worked!

Hello. My mom tried leaving us this morning. Her flight left early so
we all were up at 5. Denise came into the hospital and the rest went
to the airport. We did get lost and the iPhone wasn't helping us
much. Or it could have been me trying to be sneaky and made us lost
just kidding =) so she missed her flight. We have my mom here one more
day. Yay!

Rob is doing well. They tested his voice this morning. There is a
little bit of a difference but it will take awhile. He was told not to
talk in loud places like airports and restaurants. He is sleeping well
right now.

Traffic Report

The recent events have left Rob feeling like he has had a motorcycle with a man on it run over his neck. We know the motorcycle was going fast because behind it was VROOM. Rob is quite the artist. He came out of recovery with a whole list of things he can point to so he doesn't have to talk. He has a list of meals he prefers, pain level (his chart goes up to 11, not 10 just in case,) where it hurts, and some extra room so he can write us notes. It is on the back of an ekg report that prints out. It is pretty funny. He also wrote on there Nice job guys! and we're assuming that is to the surgeons and team that did his surgery. 

Rob was able to eat a big lunch. We had panera. He loves the broccoli cheese soup in a bread bowl. (It was on his list.) He ate well and is now napping. 

I finally finished Harry Potter. Even the doctor finished before me. I hope he comes back today so I can tell him.

All done =)

Rob is out of surgery! The surgeon just came out and said it went well. Rob was mildly sedated. We'll see him within the hour we hope. He had a gel foam injected into his vocal chord. He is on voice rest for 24 hours. He'll be writing notes to us for awhile. He can eat normally right when he gets back.

Rob just went in for surgery. This is very weird for us because we are in a different waiting room. The seats are more comfortable here. It should be a quicker surgery than we're used to.

Haircut

Hello! This afternoon was eventful! Rob's hair and beard were getting long, so I came in with my 7 dollar scissors from Target and trimmed him all up. We did the same thing last time because for some reason I never remember my scissors. My mom is always quick to go buy some because of course she wants a hair cut as well. I'm not a huge fan of cheap scissors though...

Rob was able to get up and walk a lap today. We washed his hair and cleaned him all up. He's pretty handsome, Don't you think? =) 

Surgery is tomorrow at 7:15, so we'll be getting up and getting to the hospital at 6am. 

Delay in updates

Sorry I forgot to update. Anyway, things seem to be going ok. They took him off his pain killer pump and he is now on a small dose of morphine every two hours. It's less powerful than what he was on, so they are slowly weaning him off to just take vicodine. 

Surgery is planned for 7:15 tomorrow morning. It should just be an injection in his vocal chord to be able to speak again. He'll need to rest his voice for a couple days after. He should be able to cough immediately and eat afterwards. The procedure should only last about an hour but you never know. We're happy to have the surgery early so he won't  starve. We met the doctor last night and he was very nice. Another step closer to getting out of here. 

We're looking for a place with less traffic...

Little man, Little cuff

Rob has a pretty funny personal care attendant. She said little man, little cuff quite a bit and Thank you hun, thank you. We hope to have her again. His new room is closer to the desk. We hoped that it would give him better service but so far not so much. One of us has been in his room constantly since he's been moved up here. Mike will be staying over tonight. 

Rob and I were able to take a lap around the floor. He said that this surgery hurts worse than the one last week. The one last week was a truck hitting him in his right shoulder and now his left shoulder has had a train wreck hit it. I think Rob should stop walking in traffic. =)

Tenth Floor

He'll be moving upstairs out of the icu soon! We are going to the hospital now. He's going back to the floor he was on. Lots of fun =)

Looking so well!

We are very excited to say that. We were all a little nervous to see him this morning since last night he was in pain. Rob was sleepy when we saw him. He said he already had a bed bath and sat in the chair for four hours. He'll be moved later today to the tenth floor. We'll update when we know :)

Sleepy Robbie

Hello, Rob seems to be doing well. He is very calm. He's had a few problems with nausea and with his pain level. But hopefully they've gotten it taken care of. He was resting comfortably when we left. Hopefully it will stay like that all night.

Hello! Just got to see my Robbie. He was in pain when we first saw him, but has finally calmed down. He already had his tube taken out and the eeg was off.  The next time we will see him is at 5. We're so happy that he's in a private room. 

UPDATE: Just talked to Dr Coselli. He actually just fixed two aneurysms. We're glad Rob went in and got those fixed. We are very lucky to have such a great surgeon.

Third update

Hello, They just finished up and are closing him up. He will be in a private room when he comes out in the icu. He will be so happy about that. We're just now waiting to hear when he'll be all closed up and we can go see him. 

Second update

Nurse came in. Rob's arteries are deep, so they had to find it first. The doctor just asked for the graft. Hopefully he'll be done soon. The next update will be at 12. 

First update

The nurse came out to let us know that he's asleep and they are starting to open him up. We'll know more at 10:30. 

In surgery

Good early morning! Rob was just carted away. He was the first case. We got here at 6am so we were there for him. I was able to go back and wait with him. They put another eeg on his head which will be his third one. He was in good spirits. We'll update later when we know more.

So, less than 24hours till surgery.  At least I hope so!  I really hope we are not delayed like so many times before.  I have to say, all in all I am glad to be getting this done now... but it is discouraging to think about after the surgery... like waking up with a breathing tube down your throat, and having a catheter again! :(  Lucky for me, I don't remember having woken up with the breathing tube in and trying to yank it out.  So i can only hope and pray that this next surgery will be like the first... I only remember waking up around midnight just feeling really groggy, with a very very sore neck, like every one in the hospital got a free try at kicking my neck through.  The catheter should 'hopefully' be better this time, as I hope to get it out a little sooner than before.  I think that as soon as I can show them I am coherent enough to 'hold it' that they'll take it out.  Once that's done, then it's all good.  Ok, there is one last concern... I hope they don't put me in a multi patient room for recovery!  The recovery area has 2 types of rooms, private (which I was lucky enough to get last time) and public, where there are 4 patients at the same time... so it is very loud and hectic!  It is very difficult to get sleep there.   Not exactly a great setting for recovery.

So yeah, those are my 3 concerns, breathing tube, catheter, and recovery room.  After that, it's really just smooth sailing.  Sure, now the other side of my neck is going to hurt, but it will be so nice to know that it's done!  Hmmmm... I wonder if we can change the medical term for getting both of these arteries replaced to 'The Rob Hogan' procedure :)  hehe.

As of now, I am just sitting in my sweet chair, with the computer on my lap, typing away.  The nurse came in take my vitals, and said she liked the computer.  I told her it was an Apple, and she said "really, I didn't know apple made computers any more?".  I then showed her the iPhone, and she said, "yeah, the iPhone!  Apple makes that too?"  I really need to buy stock in Apple!

HGTV is still the main stop on my TV surfing expeditions.   I am getting so excited to do stuff to mine and Marla's house when I get back, like a deck and a revamp on the master bath!  Oh yeah, lots of fun!  I just need to rob a bank first.  Actually... I bet I could write a sob story to HGTV and they would put me on one of there shows and do it all for me!  ...hmmm....

Surgery

We just found out today that Rob will be having another surgery on an aneurysm on his left side of his shoulder. This is scheduled for tomorrow sometime. We've known about this aneurysm for about two years now, but the doctors want to operate to make sure nothing happens with it. Rob seems ok with it. He is sleeping right now. The throat surgery thing will now be waiting a couple days since they don't want to do it and then have a respirator down his throat right after. Rob has recovered so well, we're praying the same will happen after this one tomorrow.  Thank you for all your prayers and comments. They have been a huge help down here.

Hello! Isn't he cute? =) Rob has been able to walk around the floor a few times. The physical therapist came this morning and let him know he doesn't need her. He just needs to keep walking around the floor to get exercise. 

Cocoa

Hello! Here is Rob's new chococat, Cocoa. Thanks for all of your comments. They have been a huge help for us. This time Rob has been able to read and update and that has been very nice.

Right now Rob is sleeping. They are still slowly taking him off of his pain meds. As of right now we're unsure when his throat thing will be. We're hoping tomorrow, but you never know with hospitals!

My update

The problem with the holes in my wrist... they did try multiple times in each hole to get the artery.  That's why it really hurt.  It took a long time.  The guy that 'decided' (ordered) to do the art line was a resident, then guy that first attempted it I'm not sure if he was or not.  Either way, after what felt like 12hours straight of getting stuck, he gave up... went to find 'the expert'.  I thought, ok, good, now at least the expert will say, lets just wait till surgery... but no... he figured he could do it... so away we go... more jamming the needle deep into my swollen wrist, till finally he gave up!  I wasn't very happy with life during and even after they gave up.  Mainly because that prior to all of this they said that the nurse was going to put in a catheter!  I had bought myself a couple hours by saying I needed to at least wait till my next shot of morphine... to which they finally said that was ok to wait another hour or two.  That's when they came into do the arterial line.  So even once they gave up on stabbing my wrist... I knew they wanted to do the catheter :(

So they came back to do the catheter, and I just broke down... I can't take it any more... so I cried up a storm for a while, and got some sympathy... and finally got the resident to say we can wait.  How kind of him.

Yeah, so pretty much Monday was my worst day here.

Today I am doing well... getting sick of being tethered to my IV machine.  My only current IV line started to bleed this morning... got blood all over a pillow and some sheets... the nurse re-dressed the IV area... still bleeding a little, but not much... so I hope it clots up soon there.

Now I just need to get off of the pain med that they are giving me and back over to what I am used to.  I hope that goes well... getting off of this stuff will not be too fun since it works really well.

Good day

Hello! Rob had a good day. He was able to sleep all morning. For lunch he ate subway and then sonic for dinner. The meals he has gotten from the hospital have not looked so good. Here's a happy picture of Rob. He is looking so well. 

Monday he is scheduled for a little out patient surgery for his throat. We'll know more later.

It's a post from me... the Robbie!

I just finished reading all the posts and comments.  Thanks every one for the kind words and prayers!  It has most definitely helped.   I know for sure it helped... after the surgery when the surgeon came in, he said kind of in passing 'i don't know how worked' about the success of the surgery... most defiantly it was something special that helped him.

I hope to be out of here soon... i go a little crazy being in a bed so many hours straight.  Sure, you can get out of bed, but with all the cords and IVs that they hook ya up too, it makes it a little bit of an ordeal... not to mention the robe I have I can slip through the neck... I don't want to get cold!

Here is a picture I just took a few minutes ago of my wrist... the handy work of one of the resident's thinking he knew so much about what to do... I know Doctors have to start some where, but I tell ya,  residents scare me... they have too much power and not enough experience. (Except for you Landon!)  When the 'real' doctors saw what they did to my wrist they were not happy... I hope the resident that ordered the arterial line got in trouble.

I guess it wouldn't bother me so much, except that I was awake when they 'tried' to do it.  

Yup, been watching a lot of Discovery (less now that I am onto mostly reruns) and HGTV.  Animal planet at night, because it is one of the few stations that doesn't seem to go to TV sales commercials.

About the food bet..

Unfortunately, no one is really going to be right'  heck, I won't even be right.

It says "which restaurant will Rob 'WANT' to eat at" not which one will I eat at... so it is only going by what I 'think', and to be honest, I won't even remember that!

So I think the pole should be split into 2... which will I eat at in Texas first, and which one in MN first.

Brett, you are a winner in my eyes!

Hope to be home soon!  Next step is getting off the IV's which really is up to me getting off the pain killers... but first I need them to start giving me more pain killers in the form of pills.  So hopefully soon.

Rob

Sleeping now =)

Rob had a rough night. He really wanted some vicodon to help him sleep, but it seems like the nurse wouldn't listen to him. Mike was even here and nothing was done about it. We're not too happy about that nurse, but we're glad Mike was at least here to try to help. He was finally able to get some sleep around 4am and he just recently has been sleeping. He does still have his button he presses for some good pain stuff which he presses every 10-15 minutes. We're finding out more today about his voice and what to do about it. 

First night in new room

Hello! We just left Rob's room. In the last two years they have gotten wifi, so we actually have a fast connection there. Rob was too tired to look at the website but I'm thinking tomorrow he'll be more awake. We watched a few hours of HGTV. 

Mike is sleeping over tonight in Rob's room. We all feel better about that. We're so used to having a nurse right around and this new floor has more patients to nurses than the icu.

Looking good

We are sitting in Rob's room. He is sitting in a chair and has been since 3 o'clock.  Mike brought him taco bell today for lunch. He said he ate about 90%. Rob still isn't able to talk. But other than that looks very good. We're all surprised to see him doing so well. 

A new room

We just got news that rob is being switched to a new room. He is going to a room where we can visit a lot more. We are sad we won't be going to his other floor where we know most of the nurses but it is really good he's doing so well.

Doing great!

Bri fix this title. I can't figure out how to do that :) Rob looked so good! We walked in to a Robbie that was smiling. He was able to eat cream of wheat, apple juice. Orange juice. Milk and ice cream. He did get to have the ice cream last night. He doesn't remember anything from last night except waking up at eleven. We were glad to hear he didn't remember having his tube taken out. We did hear he will be moved to another room where we can visit more. We don't know when that will happen. We asked for him to go to his old floor because we love the nurses up there but that is an icu and they don't think rob needs to be there. We're very excited how well Robbie is doing :)

He's out!

We were just able to go see Robbie. He looks really good. (as good as you can after surgery)  They were having problems with the respirator when we came in. They wanted him to lay flat and he didn't want to and was sitting up. They decided to take the respirator out and Rob looked much better. He was breathing just fine without it. We are going to let Rob sleep tonight and not go and visit. They were giving him good drugs to sleep. The nurse he had yesterday and today will have him tomorrow and he is very good to Rob. 

We were able to talk to Dr Coselli after the surgery. Dr Coselli is an amazing man. He said it was very complicated and was very glad we sent him down here. It was not an easy surgery, but he came through well. We are very blessed to be able to have a hospital that has an amazing doctor and a great staff to take care of Rob.

Almost done we just learned they are closing up right now. Dr coselli will come out when everythings done.

First incision

Just finished the angiogram. Now they are doing the incision. We'll know more at four thirty.

In surgery

Rob is in surgery right now. We were able to say hello. The hardest part was seeing him wheeled off. We were all there to see him. We were able to talk to a doctor and get some answers on what they're doing. It's the subclavian artery and they're doing a dacron graft to take aneurysm out. They are trying to not open the chest but we'll see how surgery is going. He's in the best room he can be in with the best surgeon out there. We all said a prayer before we left for the hospital.

Hello

Rob looked good tonight. He is ready to go in for surgery. He has been watching the Discovery channel all day, but then around 1 or 2 in the morning, he said he switches to animal planet. I did bring my camera in to take a picture but I left the battery for the camera at the hotel... so I apologize for that. 

We don't know when surgery is tomorrow. He is number 2 on the list, so there is no set time. Mike is going to call early tomorrow morning and see if the morning nurse knows when it is. 

 Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. We will keep you updated during the surgery. I just figured out how to update this from my phone.

Surgery Delayed

Marla just called (this is Jen) with a quick update and will probably add more tonight. Unfortunately surgery has been delayed until tomorrow because they need to use a different operating room that won't be available until tomorrow. They don't know what time the surgery will be, but at least Rob got to eat some Chipotle and Mountain Dew today.

We're still waiting to hear when he's going in. Last time we talked to a resident they were cleaning the OR which was at 10 this morning. Apparently they really take their time cleaning. I am about to call and offer Denise and my mom to go clean. We have already wiped everywhere in our hotel room with clorox disinfecting wipes. We'll update you all when we know.

Surgery

Hello,
We just found out that Rob will be having surgery later today. From what we know they will be going through the neck and not have to break open any ribs. We'll see. We were able to talk to the residents and confuse them greatly since we've done this before. We don't know how long the surgery will be. We won't have the computer there, but I am going to let bri know if anything goes on and he'll update it. His nurse right now had him two years ago. I ran into one of his residents that he had two years ago too. She was surprised to see us and said hello to Rob. Rob is comfortable right now and not in pain.

Plane

I got my memory stick reader. When we were getting off the plane, Rob asked if I had taken pictures yet and I didn't think he wanted pictures. So that's why they are dark. I could have taken them before we left, but oh well. It is about 1 am in this picture. We were waiting for the ambulance to come. It was so hot and humid when we were waiting in the plane, Rob asked to go outside. Little did we all realize it was hotter outside.

Much better

Rob looked good tonight. They were able to put him on a morphine drip where he pushes the button every ten minutes for 1mg. We were able to get some information from him. He was able to talk to Dr Coselli and his team. We still don't know when the surgery will be but we're all happy that he looks much better. Rob said that the mountain dew really helped his headache. He is able to eat clear liquids until midnight and then nothing after just in case he will have surgery tomorrow. We learned Rob will be moved to a private room in the same area. Hopefully he'll be able to sleep much better than last night.

Day 1 Frustration

Rob is not a happy one. He looks miserable. They aren't giving him enough medication to manage the pain. When we saw him they were putting a pic line in his left arm. The nurse putting it in was awesome. She was very helpful. Rob became ill and she was the first to get a wet wash cloth for his neck to help. She also encouraged us to go get him mountain dew since he had such a headache. Mountain dew is a clear liquid =) They gave him zofran to help settle his stomach and gave him jello so he had some food. We requested the pain management team to come and access his pain level. A lot was accomplished in the half an hour we had with him.

Surgery possibly tomorrow afternoon. They still need to do the 3d ct scan on him. We are all a little frustrated at this point, but that's what hospitals do. At least he's in intensive care and they are watching the aneurysm. We'll go back at 8 tonight to see how his pain management is.

Day 1

Hello!
We just saw Rob. We were able to talk to a few of his doctors. We haven't seen Dr Coselli yet, but he's a busy man. We did talk to Dr Cesar who we know and he usually didn't talk to us, but today he answered a lot of our questions. He's gotten a lot nicer. They are waiting for the ct scan that Mike has that the hospital was supposed to send down with us. He just landed and he is meeting my mom at the baggage claim. Rob should be going in for another ct scan so then they will compare the two scans.

We did have an ENT come in today and look at rob's vocal chords. He said that his right vocal chord is paralized and his left one is trying to make up for the right one. It may be related to the aneurysm that is on his right side that is causing his neck pain. We're hoping it's related because it would be nice to have Rob's cute voice back. I mean manly voice... =) Everything is still in the process of figuring things out, but it has been nice to talk to Doctors that know Marfans.

On a fun note Denise and I went upstairs to Rob's old floor where he spent most of his time here last time. We were able to see nurses we hadn't seen in two years. One nurse I had emailed before we left saying get ready we're coming was able to go and visit Rob this morning. We obviously don't like being away from home, but it has been nice to see familiar faces to make us feel better.

In hot, humid houston

HELLO
We made it in our plane ride. It was the smallest plane I have ever ridden in. There were 7 of us. Two pilots, two paramedics, Rob , Denise and I. I did take a picture but I can't find my memory stick reader. Rob was in a stretcher the whole time and He was able to sleep a little. They had enough pain medication for him. One of the paramedics was a member =), so he was all chatty with Denise. I was sitting closer to Rob so I couldn't hear too much. It's nice to be here. Rob is in the icu that doesn't allow visitors unless it's visiting hours, so we are leaving now. It was nice to get sleep last night. We still don't know exactly what's going on, we didn't get a phone call this morning so that is good. We'll find out more when we get there.

He's back :(

Well, old Shrubba is back in the hospital. Apparently, he wasn't feeling too good the last few weeks. He had lost his voice and his throat was feeling strange. So, last night they took him to the hospital. Uncle Richard and Marla stayed with Rob throughout the night. Today we found out that the doctors here say that Rob's issue is out of their liege. So, Rob's gonna be flown down to Houston (again). Doesn't sound like this one will be as bad as the previous ones. But, still, the fact that he has to go to Houston is a bummer.

Right now Mike is trying to get the flight together. The insurance company is closed right now and so the flight normally wouldn't leave until Monday or Tuesday, but Old Man Hogan isn't gonna let that happen. So, sounds like the flight might leave within the next few hours. Not sure how many seats the jet has, so we're not sure who's all going. But, sounds like Marla will be going for sure and she said she'd update this blog as things progressed.

Right now, we're waiting in the waiting room: Marla, Dad, Mom, Jen, Kevin, Mitch, Mary, and myself. Mike, Shannon, Auntie Mary, et cetera are on their way (others wanted to come, but we've been saying to stay home - since Rob just needs to relax and be alone).

Sculling - Lession 1

I setup a sculling lesson for myself and a few friends the other day. I wanted to get a picture of it, but I left my camera-phone in my car (since I didn't want to get it wet). So, the picture here is one I found online (if this picture were of me, you'd see what looked like a drowned rat - since it was rainy).

Anyway, sculling was really fun. It takes some time to get used to the motions, but it's so much cooler than kayaking or canoing. It's really nice because you use your legs during part of the stroke and then your upper body for the other part. So, it's a really awesome workout. I think it'll take me several more tries before I get it totally down. But, so far I'm digging it. Next time I go (sometime next week) I'll try to get a real picture.

Once I get good at it, I'll feel like some ivy-league preppy kid! Which works for me, since I'm already really good at tennis and have super rich parents. :) Now, I just need an education.

Mexico!

Hello! Bri changed it back to blogger and now I can update the website again. In May, Rob and I went to mexico with two other couples. We went on 14 different zip lines there and that was our favorite thing we did there. We went by ourselves on the line but sometimes we did get stuck. I am still trying to figure out how to put ziplines from our roof to our woods, to the duncombes woods, to the office so we wouldn't need to drive to work. If you have any ideas on how to do that without the town having a fit, let me know =)
